Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy

All you parents with kids of a certain age will recognize the title of this post as the name of a fabulous song by the Wiggles. “Fruit Salad” was my all-time favorite Wiggles song. I was a major Wiggles fan; I saw them live twice! Yet fruit salad has never been one of my favorite dishes. Unless I get control over the fruits, that is.

My problem with most fruit salads is that they often contain mostly melons, and I only like watermelons. Cantaloupe, honeydew, cassava, muskmelons—I don’t care for any of them. For years I passed on fruit salad before it occurred to me that if I volunteered to bring the fruit salad to the potluck or picnic then I could eat it too. That’s when I started making and eating fruit salad often.

Fruit Salad

The season is ripe for my kind of fruit salad (no pun intended). In the photo above you see some of my favorite ingredients for fruit salad: raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, grapes, mangoes, bananas, and pineapple. Some of these fruits I like on their own, while others I don’t enjoy on their own, but all together, served chilled, they’re fantastic. The flavors are bright, refreshing, and sweet. I encourage you to be bold. Make a fruit salad to match your tastes, no matter what they are. Yummy yummy!
